- The bottom line
Around $500 is where watch buying starts to get interesting. This is the budget at which you can get a proper in-house automatic movement, a sapphire crystal, a 200 m dive rating or a light-powered quartz that never needs a battery, though rarely all of them in one watch. Most of the decisions at this level are about trade-offs, and the right choice depends far more on how you’ll wear the watch than on any single spec.
So rather than ranking ten watches from first to last, we’ve given each pick a job. All of them come from Seiko, Orient, Citizen and Tissot, brands with long histories at this price, and all are typically sold in the $200–$500 range.

Our picks for the best watches under $500
Seiko 5 Sports SRPD55
5 Sports SKX Series
Ref. SRPD55Seiko's 4R36 automatic with hacking, hand-winding, day/date and 100 m water resistance on a steel bracelet.
Best for: A first automatic for everyday wear
- MovementAutomatic (4R36)
- Case size42.5 mm
- Water resistance100 m (330 ft)
- CrystalHardlex
Strengths
- 4R36 automatic with hacking and hand-winding
- 100 m water resistance
- Day/date and see-through case back
Limitations
- Hardlex crystal, not sapphire
- 13.4 mm thick
If you want one watch that does most things reasonably well, start here. The SRPD55 uses Seiko’s 4R36 calibre, which hacks (the seconds hand stops when you set the time), can be wound by hand and runs for approximately 41 hours off the wrist. Seiko pairs it with a 42.5 mm steel case, a unidirectional bezel, LumiBrite lume, a day/date display and 100 m of water resistance.
The trade-offs are a Hardlex crystal (Seiko’s hardened mineral glass) rather than sapphire, and a case that is 13.4 mm thick. The 46 mm lug-to-lug is reasonably compact for a 42.5 mm watch. Our full Seiko 5 Sports review goes into more detail.
Orient Bambino 38mm
Bambino 38mm (Version 7)
Ref. RA-AC0M01SA domed-crystal dress watch with Orient's in-house F6724 automatic and a 38.4 mm case.
Best for: Office wear and formal occasions
- MovementAutomatic (F6724)
- Case size38.4 mm
- Water resistance30 m (100 ft)
- CrystalDomed mineral glass
Strengths
- Domed crystal and classic proportions
- In-house F6724 with hacking and hand-winding
- Exhibition caseback
Limitations
- 30 m water resistance
- Domed mineral glass, not sapphire
The Bambino has long been a go-to recommendation for a first mechanical dress watch. Orient lists a 38.4 mm steel case, a domed mineral crystal, a 20 mm brown leather strap and its own F6724 automatic with hacking, hand-winding and a 40-hour power reserve. It’s a modest size that should sit comfortably under a shirt cuff.
Keep it away from the pool: 30 m is rain-and-handwashing territory. As a watch for the office and smarter occasions, though, it offers a lot of watch for its price band.
Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SRPB43
Presage Cocktail Time
Ref. SRPB43A textured, light-catching dial and a box-shaped Hardlex crystal over Seiko's 4R35 automatic.
Best for: Evenings and smart occasions
- MovementAutomatic (4R35)
- Case size40.5 mm
- Water resistance50 m (160 ft)
- CrystalBox-shaped Hardlex
Strengths
- Distinctive textured dial
- 4R35 with hacking and hand-winding
- 50 m water resistance
Limitations
- Leather strap only out of the box
- Hardlex rather than sapphire
If the Bambino is the quiet choice, the Cocktail Time is the flashier one. Its textured dial is the main attraction, sitting under a box-shaped Hardlex crystal in a 40.5 mm case that’s 11.8 mm thick. Inside is the 4R35, essentially a date-only sibling of the 4R36, with hacking, hand-winding and approximately 41 hours of reserve.
It also has 50 m of water resistance, a little more than the Bambino. Choose it if you want a dress watch with more personality.
Orient Kamasu
Kamasu (Mako III) Automatic Diver
Ref. RA-AA0003R19AA rare combination at this price: an automatic 200 m diver with a sapphire crystal.
Best for: An automatic dive watch on a modest budget
- MovementAutomatic (F6922)
- Case size41.8 mm
- Water resistance200 m (660 ft)
- CrystalSapphire
Strengths
- Sapphire crystal
- 200 m water resistance
- 41.8 mm case on a steel bracelet
Limitations
- 40-hour power reserve is average
- 13 mm thick
Sapphire crystals are uncommon on automatic divers in this price band, which makes the Kamasu stand out. Orient pairs one with a 41.8 mm steel case, a unidirectional dive bezel, a screw-down case back, 200 m of water resistance and the in-house F6922 automatic with hacking, hand-winding and a day/date display.
At 46.5 mm lug-to-lug it should suit a wider range of wrists than the bigger divers below. For a deeper look at the category, see our affordable dive watch guide.
Seiko Prospex ‘Turtle’ SRPE93
Prospex Sea 'Turtle' Diver
Ref. SRPE93A cushion-cased 200 m automatic diver with a screw-down crown and a long design lineage.
Best for: Larger wrists and serious water use
- MovementAutomatic (4R36)
- Case size45 mm
- Water resistance200 m (660 ft)
- CrystalHardlex
Strengths
- 200 m water resistance with screw-down crown
- 4R36 with hacking and hand-winding
- Short 47.7 mm lug-to-lug for a 45 mm case
Limitations
- 45 mm case is large
- Ships on a silicone strap
The Turtle gets its nickname from its rounded cushion case, a shape Seiko has used on divers for decades. The SRPE93 specs include a 45 mm case 13.4 mm thick, a unidirectional bezel, a screw-down crown, a screw case back and 200 m of water resistance, all powered by the 4R36.
The 45 mm diameter sounds large, but the cushion shape keeps lug-to-lug down to 47.7 mm. Still, it’s best for medium-to-large wrists.
Citizen Promaster Diver BN0150
Promaster Diver Eco-Drive
Ref. BN0150-28EA light-powered 200 m diver that runs approximately six months on a full charge.
Best for: Swimming, travel and low-maintenance ownership
- MovementSolar quartz (E168)
- Case size44 mm
- Water resistance200 m (660 ft)
- CrystalAnti-reflective mineral crystal
Strengths
- Eco-Drive solar: no routine battery changes
- 200 m rating
- 11.54 mm thick
Limitations
- 44 mm case
- Mineral crystal
Not everyone wants to wind or wear an automatic every day. The Promaster’s Eco-Drive movement charges from any light source, and Citizen quotes approximately six months of running from a full charge. Add a 200 m rating, a unidirectional elapsed-time bezel and luminous hands and markers, and you have a dive watch that can sit in a drawer for weeks and still be running when you pick it up.
The case is 44 mm across but only 11.54 mm thick, and it ships on a polyurethane strap with a 20 mm lug width.
Tissot PRX 40mm Quartz
PRX 40mm Quartz
Ref. T137.410.11.041.00Integrated-bracelet style with a sapphire crystal, 100 m of water resistance and quartz convenience.
Best for: Integrated-bracelet style without automatic upkeep
- MovementQuartz
- Case size40 mm
- Water resistance100 m (330 ft)
- CrystalSapphire
Strengths
- Sapphire crystal
- 100 m water resistance
- Quick-release bracelet and battery end-of-life indicator
Limitations
- Quartz won't appeal to mechanical fans
- Integrated design limits strap choice
The PRX brings Swiss branding, a sapphire crystal and an integrated steel bracelet to this budget. The quartz version is 40 mm wide, 10.4 mm thick, and because the bracelet flows straight out of the case it tends to suit a wide range of wrists. Tissot adds 100 m of water resistance, a quick-release bracelet and an end-of-life indicator that warns you when the battery is running low.
It dresses up for the office and down for the weekend. If you’d rather have the mechanical version, our PRX Powermatic 80 review covers the automatic, which sits in a higher price band.
Citizen Tsuyosa
Tsuyosa Automatic
Ref. NJ0150-56LAn automatic integrated-bracelet watch with a sapphire crystal and a 42-hour reserve.
Best for: A colorful everyday automatic on a bracelet
- MovementAutomatic (8210)
- Case size40 mm
- Water resistance50 m (160 ft)
- CrystalSapphire
Strengths
- Sapphire crystal
- 42-hour power reserve with hacking
- Bright dial options
Limitations
- 50 m water resistance
- Date magnifier divides opinion
If you like the PRX look but want an automatic within this budget, the Tsuyosa is the obvious alternative. Citizen fits its 8210 automatic, with hacking and a 42-hour reserve, in a 40 mm steel case that is 12.1 mm thick, under sapphire, with a magnified date. The bright dial options are a big part of its appeal.
Water resistance is 50 m, enough for a swim but less than the Seiko 5 or PRX.
Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK001
5 Sports GMT (SKX series)
Ref. SSK001An automatic with a true 24-hour GMT hand and rotating 24-hour bezel for tracking a second time zone.
Best for: Frequent travelers
- MovementAutomatic (4R34)
- Case size42.5 mm
- Water resistance100 m (330 ft)
- CrystalHardlex with magnifier (date)
Strengths
- 24-hour GMT hand plus rotating 24-hour bezel
- 4R34 with hacking and hand-winding
- 100 m water resistance
Limitations
- 13.6 mm thick
- Hardlex crystal
A GMT watch shows a second time zone on a 24-hour scale, which is useful if you travel often or work with colleagues abroad. The SSK001 adds a GMT hand and a rotating 24-hour bezel to the familiar 42.5 mm Seiko 5 case, using the 4R34 calibre. You can track two zones with the hand, or a third by turning the bezel.
It’s 13.6 mm thick, slightly more than the SRPD, and has 100 m of water resistance with a five-row steel bracelet.
Citizen Chandler BM8180
Chandler Eco-Drive
Ref. BM8180-03EA slim solar field watch with a 24-hour military dial, day/date and 100 m water resistance.
Best for: A no-fuss solar everyday watch
- MovementSolar quartz (E101)
- Case size37 mm
- Water resistance100 m (330 ft)
- CrystalMineral crystal
Strengths
- Eco-Drive solar, approx. 6 months reserve
- Slim 8.95 mm case
- 100 m water resistance
Limitations
- 18 mm lugs limit strap choice slightly
- Mineral crystal
For the lowest-maintenance ownership on this list, the Chandler is hard to argue with. Its 37 mm steel case is just 8.95 mm thick, it’s solar-powered with approximately six months of reserve, and it’s rated to 100 m. The military-style dial adds a 24-hour track alongside a day/date display.
It’s a smaller, quieter watch than most here, which suits slimmer wrists and anyone who’d rather not think about their watch.
How to choose a watch under $500
Automatic, quartz or solar?
Automatics wind themselves from your wrist’s motion and appeal to people who enjoy the machinery, but they are less accurate than quartz and stop if left unworn for a couple of days. Quartz is accurate and low-maintenance. Solar quartz like Citizen’s Eco-Drive goes further and removes routine battery changes. Our automatic vs quartz guide lays out the pros and cons, and if you’re leaning mechanical, see our beginner automatic picks.
Crystal and water resistance
Sapphire (around 9 on the Mohs scale) resists scratches far better than mineral glass or Seiko’s Hardlex. Under $500 it appears on the Kamasu, Tsuyosa and PRX. For water, 50 m is fine for a swim, 100 m covers most water sports, and 200 m is the usual threshold for dive watches.
Size check
Lug-to-lug length often matters more than case diameter. The 45 mm Turtle is 47.7 mm lug-to-lug, while an integrated-bracelet watch like the 40 mm PRX has no conventional lugs at all. Try our wrist size calculator before committing.
Bracelet or strap?
A steel bracelet adds value and versatility, and several picks here include one. Leather and silicone straps are cheaper to replace and change the look quickly, but check lug width: 20 mm and 22 mm open up the most options.
How we chose
This is a research-based guide. We didn’t wear or test these watches. Instead, we compared manufacturer specifications from Seiko, Orient, Citizen and Tissot, checked them against reputable sources, and weighed each model’s track record and value within its price band. Where a spec isn’t published, we don’t quote it. Our methodology page explains the process.
Frequently asked questions
Is $500 enough for a good automatic watch?
Yes. Seiko, Orient and Citizen all make in-house automatics in this range, including the Seiko 5 Sports, Orient Bambino and Citizen Tsuyosa.
Which watch under $500 has a sapphire crystal?
Among our picks, the Orient Kamasu, Citizen Tsuyosa and Tissot PRX Quartz use sapphire crystals.
What is the most low-maintenance option?
The Citizen Chandler and Promaster Diver use solar Eco-Drive movements, with approximately six months of reserve from a full charge and no routine battery changes.
Which is the best dive watch under $500?
The Orient Kamasu pairs sapphire with 200 m water resistance. The Seiko Turtle suits larger wrists, and the Citizen Promaster suits buyers who want solar quartz.
What does a GMT watch do?
It adds a 24-hour hand that can be set to a second time zone, so you can read home time and local time at once. The Seiko 5 Sports GMT also has a rotating 24-hour bezel.
The bottom line
For a single all-rounder, the Seiko 5 Sports SRPD55 balances features, durability and value well. Choose the Orient Bambino or Seiko Presage for dressier wear, the Kamasu for a sapphire-equipped diver, the PRX Quartz for everyday polish, the GMT for travel and the Chandler for the least possible fuss. Decide where you’ll wear the watch most, then pick the one built for that.
